I've seen them on rods where guys are fishing from the beach for big sharks and whatnot. Surf rods you buy online will intrigue you, as you could purchase both spinning rods and casting rods designed specifically for surf fishing. I've never seen it on a surf rod. I prefer using large spinning reels when targeting sandbars.
